  • Duvet Cover
  • The Girls whip up a splendid duvet cover for the bed (and share a handy tip to keep the comforter in place inside the cover).
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-111

In this segment, April and Jerri make a duvet cover for the bed. The top is made of decorative fabric and the bottom of cotton lining fabric; the two are then sewn together. April also gives a tip on adding ties at each corner of the duvet and the comforter to keep the comforter from shifting inside the cover. The top is secured with snap tape.

    Materials:

    fabric
    gimp trim
    ribbon
    scissors
    pins
    snap tape
    sewing machine

    1. Depending on the size of your bed, you will need to cut two or three pieces of fabric from the bolt, using the full width. If your bed requires only two pieces of fabric, center one panel and cut the other in half, placing one on either side of the center panel.

    2. Sew the panels together, making sure the pattern is right side up on all the pieces.

    3. If your patterns don't match, you can always sew a decorative trim such as gimp down the seams; this helps both to make the duvet more elegant and to match up the panels.

    4. Use the zipper foot on the machine to attach the gimp trim. After you add the gimp, fold the bottom edge in a double 2-1/2" hem and stitch in place. Repeat the same process on the back of the duvet with a liner fabric.

    5. Add snap tape to close the opening to the duvet cover. Place one side of the fabric on the top and right side of the duvet cover and pin in place. Stitch along the edge of the snap tape using the zipper foot (figure A). Repeat on the back of the duvet cover, making sure that the snaps line up with the front panel. Repeat on all sides.

    6. To help keep the comforter from sliding around inside the duvet cover, sew ties into each inner corner of the duvet and to each corner of the comforter. Using ribbons, twill tape or strips of fabric, stitch ties into the seam allowances. Then simply tie the comforter to the duvet to prevent movement, and snap shut.
