  • Topiaries
  • The Girls create decorative a pair of elegant fabric-covered topiaries.
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-110

In this segment, Kelly and Jeanne make two topiaries for the dining-room table. Foam ball topiaries and a base are covered with fabric and ribbon. A final touch is a tassel that Kelly ties on each.

    Materials:

    fabric
    foam balls
    pins
    glue
    wooden rods
    container (e.g., flowerpot)
    foam
    tassel (optional)

    1. First cut foam to fit inside the container; set aside.

    2. Cut 3x5 strips of fabric to cover the wooden rods.

    3. Coat each rod with glue and wrap the fabric around it, making sure to smooth out any bumps.

    4. Push one rod into the foam in the container and place a foam ball on top. Add another rod to the top of the foam ball and top with a smaller foam ball.

    5. Next cut out fabric circles measuring 26" for the bottom ball and 16" for the top.

    6. Cover the top ball first by pushing the pins on the back and underneath sides of the fabric, into the foam ball at the edge of the wooden rod. Push small pins throughout the ball to add texture.

    7. Fold the larger circle of fabric in half and cut to half of the fold; this will allow you to wrap the material around the rod.

    8. Using straight pins, once again start pinning from the back of the fabric into the foam ball at the edge of the rod. Stick extra pins through the ball for texture.

    9. For an extra-decorative element, you can add a tasseled cord around the balls.
