  • The Girls finish the kitchen with custom table linens.
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-109

It's time for the final touches. Cat, April and Kelly add several fabric accents to pull together the kitchen. The table and chairs get special attention (and a punch of color) with the addition of a table topper, a runner and chair cushions. Other accents include placemats, barstool covers, curtains and wall art.

    Seat Cushions

    Materials:

    foam
    fabric
    measuring tape
    muslin
    scissors
    pins
    sewing machine
    welting (optional)

    1. First to determine the correct shape for the cushions; then lay a piece of muslin on the chair and trace the shape of the seat.

    2. Trace this pattern onto a piece of foam of desired thickness (1-1/2"-2" is generally good). Cut out the foam accordingly.

    3. Center the foam on a piece of fabric and trace the pattern of the cushion onto the fabric. Divide the desired thickness of the fabric by two. Draw another line parallel to the first line and with the distance of the above measurement. These create the seam line.

    4. Draw a third line 1/2" from the second. Cut out the patterns according to the third line.

    5. Trace and cut two more identical fabric pieces. On the corner of each piece of fabric, sew gathering stitches along the seam line.

    6. Place one piece of fabric wrong side up and lay the foam on top. Adjust the gathering stitches until the seam line is just a bit bigger than the foam. Place the second piece of fabric on top.

    7. Remove the foam from the middle. Line up the two pieces of fabric and pin together. Machine-baste the two pieces together, leaving an opening to insert the foam.

    8. Make the welting (optional). With the right sides together and the cut edges aligned, sew the welting around the perimeter of one piece of the seat cushion cover and one piece of the back cushion cover; join and finish the welting ends neatly.

    9. Turn the fabric right side out and insert the foam; hand-stitch closed.

    10. You can also add ties to the back of the cushion to attach it to the chair.

    Tablecloth and table runner
    Tablecloth

    Materials:

    primary fabric
    backing fabric
    pins
    sewing machine
    thread and scissors
    trim

    1. Lay primary cloth out over the desired space. After allowing for 1" extra on each side of the primary cloth, trim to the desired dimensions.

    2. Determine the desired width of the table runner's border and trim the backing cloth to size, allowing enough excess to finish the sides with a standard hem.

    3. After hemming the backing fabric's sides, lay the primary cloth on top of the backing cloth. Fold the primary cloth 1" under on all four sides and pin in place on the backing fabric.

    4. Run the pieces under the sewing machine, using thread of a complimentary shade.

    5. Add trim around the edges for a decorative touch.
