In this segment, April and Mary Beth make a Roman shade to hang over the window above the kitchen sink. To construct the shade, they line the fabric, then sew and attach it to a mounting board. They attach a series of rings and thread cords through each to create a pulley effect.
Materials:fabric curtain rod curtain rings string sewing machine/needle and thread l-brackets
1. Measure the size of the window and transfer the measurements to the fabric. Add 4" to the sides and 9" to the length. Cut the fabric and the lining to these measurements. 2. Lay the wrong sides together. Turn the side hems in, double 1", pin and press. Turn up the bottom hem 3", pin and press. 3. Sew a simple stitch at the top and bottom, and then sew again 3/4" below the first stitching line to create a pocket for the weight rod. 4. Evenly measure and mark where the shade rings will be placed. Caption: Although you can follow the manufacturer's instructions for spacing, a good rule of thumb is to space them 6" apart across the fabric. 5. Sew them on with small zigzag stitches (figure A). 6. Add the shade cord. Simply pull the shade cord through the rings, making sure to knot the cords at the bottom hem (figure B).
7. Mark the mounting board at the same distance as the rings (figure C) and put in the eyehooks. Now mount the shade to the board with a staple gun (figure D) and run the cord through the eyehooks (figure E).
8. Add the weight to the pocket that was previously created.9. Attach to the wall using L-brackets.
