  • Valance With Grommets
  • The Girls make valances for a screened porch.
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-108

In this segment, April and Amy make valances to hang at the top of each screen on the porch. First, the valance panels are assembled and finished off with topstitching. April then shows how to hammer grommets through the top of each valance in order to hang them.

    Materials:

    fabric
    pins
    sewing machine/needle and thread
    grommet kit
    buckram

    1. Measure the area where you want to hang the valance. Cut the fabric accordingly and pin the right sides together.

    2. Sew a straight line along the edges, removing the pins as you go. Stop sewing about 24" before you finish. Turn the valance right side out and hand-stitch the valance closed. (You can add buckram to help stiffen the valance before sewing it closed.)

    3. Use a simple grommet kit to add the grommets. Mark exactly where you want the grommets. Then put a cutting block under the mark. Place the cutter from the kit over the mark and strike with a mallet to cut the hole (figure A). Next keeping the valance face down, insert the grommet from the bottom. Then place the washer over the grommet, round sided up.

    4. To secure the grommet, insert the stud of the die tool into the barrel of the eyelet. First tap lightly, and then gradually increase strength until the grommet is set. Use a mallet, not a steel hammer, which could dent the grommet.

    5. Repeat steps for each grommet hole.
