  • Dry Bar
  • The Girls build and upholster a dry bar.
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-108

In this segment, Kelly and Drew custom-build and upholster a juice bar. The bar is constructed of plywood and 2x4s; then fabric is glued and stapled to the wood base. A final touch is a coordinating fabric band that is glued and stapled to the bottom of the bar.

    Dry Bar
    Materials:

    plywood
    2x4s
    spray adhesive
    fabric (two types)
    staple gun/staples
    l-brackets
    measuring tape

    1. Measure the area where you want the bar and cut the plywood accordingly.

    2. Screw a 2x4 inside each piece of plywood (figure A). When the bar pieces are all screwed together, plywood will be placed on top of the 2x4s to form a storage shelf.

    3. Tightly screw the side pieces to the front piece of the bar (figure B).

    4. Once the 2x4s on the inside of the bar are lined up, just lay the precut plywood on top of the 2x4s and screw it down (figure C). This creates a handy shelf.

    5. Measure each panel of the bar and combine the total (figure D), allowing for an extra inch on each side. Cut the fabric accordingly (figure E).

    6. Cover the entire base of the bar with spray adhesive. Tightly wrap the material around the bar (figure F) and staple it down on the inside edges. Further secure it by also stapling the fabric to the top of the base.

    7. Add a second material to the bottom of the bar for added appeal (figure G). Measure and cut the second fabric to fit the entire width of the bar, allowing for an extra inch on each side. Cut the length of the fabric 10" from the bottom. Glue a 1" seam on the top and bottom and iron to get a flat seam.

    8. Glue and staple this bottom piece as before. Don't staple the top of the fabric, however: just add glue.

    9. Add the top to the bar (figure H) and secure in place on the base with L-brackets (figure I).
