    In this segment, Amy and Drew Morton start painting the porch: yellow for the ceiling and turquoise blue for the floor. Then Amy helps April and Kelly make some simple fringed napkins and vinyl-coated placemats (the vinyl is attached with fusible fabric).

    Fringed Napkin and Laminated Placemat

    Fringed Napkins

    Materials:

    washable weave fabric
    scissors
    needle and thread

    1. Measure and cut fabric to the desired napkin size (figure A).

    2. Sew a straight stitch all the way around the fabric about 1/2" in (measurement can vary, depending on how big you want the fringe to be) (figure B).

    3. Simply start pulling threads all the way around the edges to create the fringe (figure C).

    Placemats

    Materials:

    fabric
    fusible fabric
    clear laminate
    scissors
    iron
    measuring tape

    1. Start by measuring and cutting material to the desired placemat size (figure D).

    2. Place fabric print-side up and press on the fusible fabric with a hot iron (figure E).

    3. Carefully pull off the fusible fabric and hand-press a clear laminate (figure F) over the placemat material. (Be sure to smooth out the air bubbles as you work.)
