    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-105

The Material Girls have substituted a couch they found on the porch (figure A) for the one that was too big in the room (figure B) and had it re-covered in orange chenille (figure C). And now for the finishing touches.

    Ottoman
    Ottoman

    Materials:

    measuring tape
    fabric
    scissors
    staple gun and staples
    trim
    fabric glue

    1. Measure the size of the ottoman, adding a few extra inches to the measurement.

    2. Cut the fabric to the appropriate size.

    3. Cover the ottoman with the fabric and staple in place on the underneath side. Start stapling in the middle, alternating sides. Continue stapling all the way around; leave a few inches staple-free at the corners.

    4. Miter the edges by folding the corner of the fabric into a point; staple in place, making sure all the fabric is smooth.

    5. Use fabric glue to add a row of trim around the edge of the ottoman to give it a cleaner look.

    Lampshade

    Materials:
    lampshade
    fabric
    scissors
    fabric spray adhesive

    1. Measure the circumference and depth of the lampshade. Add a couple of inches for overlapping and trimming. Transfer the measurements to the fabric and cut out the pieces.

    2. Make sure the fabric piece properly covers the lampshade before gluing it down.

    3. Spray fabric adhesive over the entire lampshade. Wrap the fabric around the lampshade, making sure to smooth out wrinkles. Turn the excess fabric over and trim. Then spray again and press in place.

    Silk Room Divider
    Silk Room Divider

    Materials:

    fabric
    scissors
    sewing machine
    iron
    chalk
    cording (optional)

    1. Cut two pieces of fabric to desired length making sure you allow for hems and seam allowance. (There will be face fabric on both sides because the panel will be seen from both sides). As we are making a room divider, cut piece of interlining 2" shorter than face fabric.

    2. Sew hems in at this time and serge across the bottom of the interlining.

    3. Place face fabric to face fabric and interlining on top, making sure the interlining is approximately 2" above the finished hemline.

    4. With the top edges even with each other, you can now use chalk to draw in the scalloped edge, (3" down for the center of the scallop is a standard size, but any amount can be decided on). Keep enough seam allowance on the outside edges of the panels, so you should allow for that first. That way you can divide the rest of the remaining space to get even distance between the scallops.

    5. You can use cording or not. If you use it, you will need to place it between the two face fabrics and pin into place.

    6. Sew all the way around the sides and top, clipping the edges of the cording to fit well in the scallop areas.

    7. Turn right side out and press.

    8. You can sew rings at the top of each point of the scallop and at each end, or you can use drapery pins to attach rings instead.

    Materials:

    fabric
    scissors
sewing machine or needle and thread
    pins
    pillow insert

    1. Cut two pieces of fabric to desired size of pillow, making sure to add extra for the seam allowance

    2. Place the two pieces of cut fabric with wrong sides together, and stitch around three of the four sides. On the fourth side sew around corners and leave an opening to insert your pillow form.

    3. Turn the fabric right side out and insert the pillow form.

    4. Pin the opening closed and hand stitch shut.

    Piano Bench Cover
    Piano Bench Cover

    Materials:

primary cloth of desired pattern/color and size
backing fabric of the desired color and size
    pins
    sewing machine
    thread and scissors

    1. Lay primary cloth out over the desired space. Allowing for 1" on each side of the primary cloth, trim to desired dimension.

    2. Determine desired width of the bench cover's border and trim the backing cloth to size, allowing enough excess to finish the sides with a standard hem.

    3. After hemming the backing fabric's sides, lay the primary cloth on top of the backing cloth. Fold the primary cloth 1" under on all four sides and pin in place on the backing fabric.

    4. Sew the pieces on the sewing machine, using thread of a complementary shade.
