    1. First measure the size of the window from the outside of the molding for both length and width. Then add the length to where you want the curtain to fall. Add 8" to the bottom for the hem and 8" to the top for the buckram.

    2. Mark the measurements on the velvet with the chalk and cut accordingly (figure A).

    3. Cut the lining 1" shorter than the finished curtain length. To that add 6" for a 3" bottom hem.

    4. Now you want to add the bottom hem to the velvet. To determine the top of the fabric from the bottom, make sure that the nap of the velvet runs down smoothly. Fold up the bottom of the velvet 4" (use a seam measure to be exact). Pin in place (figure B). Then hand-stitch the hem (using a sewing machine can damage the velvet). Using a fine-gauge needle, hide the knot in the fold and then stick the needle through the velvet and directly back out (figure C). This helps to make the hem almost invisible.

    5. Create the bottom hem on the lining. Fold 6" across and pin in the middle. Tuck it in for a 3" hem. Press, pin and sew with a straight stitch.

    6. Lay the lining on the panel with a 1" difference in length. Then, on the lining, measure in 3" on the sides, mark and cut.

    7. Fold in the sides of the velvet 3" and pinch for a finished hem of 1-1/2". Hand-stitch the hem just like the bottom panel and repeat on the other side.

    8. Lay the buckram across the top of the lining. Fold the velvet over the top and tuck the edge under. Then pin and hand-stitch.

    9. Add curtain pins to hang the curtains from hooks on the rod (figure D).
