    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-104

In this segment, Kelly and Marty finish the headboard by adding decorative tufts. Then April and Solange make a comforter, which consists of fabric panels stitched together for the top and bottom; batting is then layered between the panels and cording is stitched around the outside.

    Materials:

    fabric
    measuring tape
    batting
    sewing machine
    needle and thread

    1. Measure the length and width of the mattress (figure A), keeping in mind how far the sides will drop toward the floor (figure B). Cut two widths of fabric from the measurements taken.

    2. Split one width of the face fabric lengthwise and sew half of the width on each side of the one full width (full width will be in the center). Do the same with the fabric you have chosen for the back of the comforter.

    3. Cut the sewn top and bottom pieces to the previous measurements, adding a half-inch seam allowance on all edges.

    4. If you are using any decorative cord, now is the time to sew it on (figure C).

    5. Lay the fabric pieces right sides facing each other and pin together, making sure the seams line up.

    6. Sew the pieces together, leaving the bottom edge open.

    7. Now lay a piece of batting (fiberfill) on the sewn pieces and sew again on the same line, but with the batting getting sewn as well (figure D).

    8. Now flip the comforter right side out and hand-stitch the lower end closed (figure E), catching in the batting on the end.

    9. You can add decorative buttons or just hand-tack the comforter together in random places.
