Easy Baked ApplesMaterials:
4 firm, tart apples such as Macintosh or Granny Smith
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup walnuts
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
butter
raisins and walnuts (optional)
shallow baking dish
paring knife or corer
foil
apple cider or water
Select a firm, tart apple such as Macintosh or Granny Smith, which bake well. Core the top of the apple, but be sure to leave a half inch at the bottom so the filling won't fall out.
Place the apples in a shallow baking dish with an inch of apple cider or fresh water. Combine 1/3 cup brown sugar with 1/4 cup walnuts, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
Spoon mixture into apples. Sprinkle on a few raisins (optional). Dot the top of each apple with a little butter. Cover with foil, and bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
Finally, uncover and baste with syrup from the bottom of the pan, and bake for 10 more minutes.
Tip: Serve warm or at room temperature. They go great with vanilla ice cream!
