    • The best way to cover a pencil holder is to actually use an empty quart paint can—clean of course. Use transfer tape available through 3M. Peel back one side of the transfer tape and place it on the fabric (figure A).

    • Transfer tape is like double-stick tape with a paper backing. It comes in wider rolls making this job very easy. You can also use regular double-stick tape. With one side of the tape stuck to the fabric, write the measurements onto the paper backing of the transfer tape.

Note: To measure round items easily, use tailor's tape. It is easy to get the circumference of the object. Transfer the measurement onto the paper backing of the double-stick tape. Measure the circumference and heights of the paint can and transfer those figures as length and width.

    • Another adhesive you can use is spray adhesive that comes in a can. Spray the outside spine and top cover of a journal your choice to cover in fabric. Center the journal on the fabric, and wrap the cover/top and spine of the journal. Make sure you smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles as you go. Once the spray adhesive has dried, open the cover and using a sharp cutting tool and using the edge of the journal as a straight edge, cut the fabric (figure B). Repeat this same process on the other side.
