    Safety Gadgets

    • Baby Monitor. There are all types of baby monitors available (figure A). The MobiCam 2.4 Ghz Wireless Color Handheld Video Monitor is unique because it has a color video screen so you not only hear your baby, but you can see your baby as well. It has a range of up to 300 feet. You can purchase multiple monitors so more than one person can monitor the baby or the pool area or wherever you decide to place it. It takes batteries but you can also plug it into a wall socket. This monitor also has a night vision. The cost is approximately $150.

    • Smoke Detectors. Some studies have found that the typical piercing fire alarm may wake up adults, but do not always awaken children who are in a deep sleep. Not that the sound isn't loud enough, it is just that their brains respond better to sounds they are more familiar with than the sound of an alarm. The KidSmart Vocal Smoke Detector DC powered unit (figure B) is unique because a parent can record a wake up voice message which can wake up your children better and also make them less frightened because it is a voice they recognize. You can even give instructions like—wake up, walk downstairs, and go outside. It has 15 seconds of recording time. It also has a fire drill button so that you can practice. The cost is approximately $70.

    • Wireless Alarm System. The SSD-16 Wireless Home Security System (figure C) is unique because it is wireless—so it is easy and quick to install. It is great for people who rent apartments or businesses and don't want to invest in some high tech system for a place you might leave. It is great for spaces that are about 5,000 square feet or less. You can choose whether you want to pay for an additional monitoring fee which will connect to the police or fire department. It also has all the basics—a loud alarm system, an emergency panic button, motion detectors and other features. The cost is approximately $200.

    • Pool Monitoring. The Terrapin Safety Turtle Pool Alarm alerts you if your child has fallen into a pool. There is a wrist watch that looks like a turtle (figure D) and can only be taken off with a key that you put onto your child. Then there is a base that works up to 100 feet away that will give off an alarm if the wrist watch is immersed in water. You cannot only use this at your own pool, but take it to campgrounds or a relative's homes. If your neighbor has one too, you can get a different color wrist watch that operates on a different frequency. It is an interesting idea and is easy to set up. The base costs approximately $100 and the wrist watches are $50 each. Obviously, don't use this as a substitute for supervision but it can be helpful.

    • Internet Safety. Protecting your computers from viruses, worms, and any other computer problem is important. The more internet sites you visit, the more chances there are for spyware and viruses to infect your PC. Mac users are largely immune to this problem due to the way the Mac operating system runs. Window users should always have anti-virus software running if they visit a lot of different sites. And you can also get programs that have parental monitoring programs. Teach your children to surf responsibility. Keep the family PC in the living room so you can see what your kids are looking at. There are a lot of anti-virus programs you can purchase.
