    spray starch (optional)

    Ironing a Shirt Correctly

    • Start with a damp shirt. The dampness will work in your favor.

    • Iron the underside of the collar, working from the center to the points to avoid creasing.

    • Flip over and repeat on the outside.

Tip: Have a spray bottle of water handy, to give the shirt an extra spritz.

    • Place one shoulder over the narrow end of the board and iron from the yoke. The yoke is the area where the collar meets the arm and the body of the shirt. Repeat on the other shoulder.

    • To iron the cuffs, iron the inside of the cuff first, then flip the sleeve over and do the outside of the cuff.

    • Next, iron the sleeve, beginning with the button side. Repeat on the other sleeve.

    • Iron both front panels, then slip the shirt over and iron the back.

    • When ironing the button placket, turn the shirt inside out and iron from there. Spray the placket with a little spray starch and then iron (figure A). This is so much easier than trying to zigzag around the buttons.
