File Cabinet Makeover- First, wash down the cabinet with a rag and a simple mixture of soap and water to get rid of any grease. This is very important to allow the paint to set and dry. The card slots and the handles should be covered in masking tape unless they can be removed if you will be painting around them.
- Before you start painting, create your own design (figure A) or use stencils. Measure the size of the cabinets and create a stencil pattern or design that covers each drawer.
- Use low-tack tape to tape out the areas you don't want painted and protect the top and sides with craft paper or newspaper (figure B).
- You can use any type of paint that will adhere to metal or try using a high gloss auto paint. You need to spray thin layers and sweep across (figure C) and move down slowly.
Safety Tip: Make sure to work in an extremely well-ventilated room. You should also wear respirators and wear gloves for extra protection. - Spray the drawers in several light coats moving back and forth. Allow paint to dry in between coats.
