- To remove stains on porcelain sinks, pour lemon juice on the stained area, followed by powdered alum, which is available in the spice aisle of the grocery (figure A). Work into the stain, let the mixture sit for several hours, pour on a little more lemon juice and wipe away the stain.
- To clean on stainless sinks, sprinkle on baking soda, which is a mild abrasive, and work into the sink with a sponge (figure B).
- Remove rust stains on a stainless sink with undiluted white vinegar; pour on a towel and work into the rust (figure C). For tough rust stains, apply hydrogen peroxide and cream of tartar, leave on for several hours, and then scrub the stain and rinse.
- Polish stainless sinks with flour; buff dry flour into a dry sink for a high shine. Rinse and dry. Club soda also shines stainless steel, just pour it on and buff dry.
- When the sink is clean, shiny and free of stains, buff on a protective coating of baby oil; it enhances the shine and makes it easy to remove water spots.
