From "Talking Dirty With the Queen of Clean"
    episode DQOC-137

Unlike the parlor of old, today's living room isn't saved for special occasions. Instead, it's generally the busiest room in the house -- and that translates into constant clutter and mess. Here are some tips to help you keep your living room livable.

    • Use fabrics that don't easily show dirt, stains and pet hair. Before purchasing upholstered furniture, make sure the cleaning instructions fit the family's lifestyle.

    • Vinyl and hard-surface flooring is easier to clean than carpet. If you like rugs, buy ones that have low nap.

    • Use furniture, such as small chests, that can double as storage space (figure A).

    • Hard-surface window treatments are easier to clean than fabric treatments.

    • Less clutter means less to clean. A clutter-free room gives the illusion of being clean.

    • Make a focal point with a larger piece of art instead of several smaller pieces (figure B). You'll have less surface area to clean.

    • Avoid ruffled or pleated lampshades and fabrics because they collect dust.

    • Organize books to a single area.

    • Clean artificial floral arrangements outside in a trash bag that contains salt, which will loosen dirt. Hose off, if possible.
