    • Wash sleeping bags with a mixture of detergent, 1 cup borax and 1 cup white vinegar. Allow to dry thoroughly. Sprinkle with baking soda if storing for an extended period of time (figure A).

    • King-size pillowcases make an excellent substitute for missing sleeping-bag covers.

    • When cooking over a fire, prevent soot build-up on pans by rubbing a bar of soap over the exterior bottom and sides of the pan (figure B). Soot will wash off easily.

    • Always have a line of strong multipurpose nylon rope handy.

    • Keep toilet paper handy and dry in a lidded coffee can.

    • Always carry a whistle: in an emergency, it will never need batteries.
