Here are a few final tips that will help you keep your castle sparkling clean.

    • Clean windows with a solution of 1 pint rubbing alcohol, 2 tablespoons dishwashing liquid and 2 tablespoons clear ammonia. Apply cleaner with a nylon-covered sponge or a good scrubber (figure A). Soap up the window, then remove soap residue with a squeegee and wipe dry (figure B). Finish by wiping drips with a chamois or paper towels.

    • Remove dust and dirt from blinds, ceiling fans, dry windowsills and ceilings with lambswool dusters and mitts. White athletic socks worn on the hands can be used to dust and wash vertical blinds.

    • To repel static electricity, which attracts dust, fill a spray bottle with 4 parts water and 1 part liquid fabric softener. Spray on a cloth and wipe over blinds.

    • Remove candle soot from walls with a dry soot-and-dirt-removal sponge. Wash the wall to remove any residue.

    • To prevent candles from producing soot, trim wicks to 1/4" before lighting (figure C). Use a wick dipper to extinguish the flame; dip in the liquid wax pool and pull the wax over the flame (figure D). The coating of wax on the wick makes it easier to relight the candle.
