    Storage areas often draw pests in the form of crickets, roaches and silverfish, among other breeds of critters. To protect stored items, try the following suggestions:

    • Get rid of clutter (figure A).

    • Store clothes in tightly fitted containers. Bugs will eat fabric, and their droppings have oils in them that can stain fabrics.

    • Paper, boxes and rugs all have glue components that bugs will eat for the protein.

    • In basements, use a dehumidifier to keep the area dry. Just remember to empty the reservoir frequently.

    • Store items in sealed plastic containers on platforms several inches off the ground (figure B).

    • Store containers several inches away from walls.

    Tip: Prevent ants from entering the home by sprinkling dried mint or red pepper wherever they may find entry.
