From "Talking Dirty With the Queen of Clean"
    episode DQOC-127

The Queen of Clean? demonstrates that kitchen ingredients are also inexpensive beauty products. She incorporates oatmeal, buttermilk, vegetable oil and sugar into facials, hair and exfoliating treatments. Conversely, the Queen pulls items from the medicine chest for double duty as cleaning agents.

We spend a lot of time and money making ourselves beautiful, but did you know there are ingredients in your kitchen that make safe, natural and inexpensive beauty products, including soap (figure A). And while you are exploring the products on your kitchen shelves, don't forget to check out the medicine cabinet shelves, where you can find some superior cleaning products.

    • Dry shampoo Mix together 1 cup ground oatmeal and 1 cup baking soda (figure B). Work into the hair and scalp, then flip your head over and brush the product out of your hair. The oatmeal absorbs oil, and the baking soda deodorizes hair. This mixture also removes styling-product residue. For easy clean-up, apply to the hair outside or in the shower.

    • Hair conditioner Warm olive or vegetable oil in the microwave, then test on your arm to make sure it isn't too hot. Apply to the ends of the hair and work in, using the palms of your hands (figure C).

Cover hair with a shower cap and let the oil soak into the shaft before shampooing.
