Do you spread your chores out over the week or speed clean over the weekend? Do you have to-do lists on the refrigerator, and do you actually keep up with everything on the lists that needs attention? Either way, today we're talking about tips and guidelines for getting it all done.

A lot goes into managing a household, and you can't do everything at once. If you want to keep things clean -- and yourself sane -- it's important to come up with a cleaning plan that works for you and then stick to it (figure A). And if you need help with pacing yourself throughout the year, check out the book The Queen for All Seasons, written by yours truly, The Queen of Clean?.

    Basic Bathroom Cleaning

    • Toilets: Use a toilet brush that doesn't have hard bristles or metal parts; a soft brush is easier to disinfect and will not rust. A mixture of baking soda and borax makes an effective toilet-bowl cleaner (figure B). Sprinkle inside the bowl and scour with the brush. Let the brush soak in the cleaner to disinfect before rinsing the bowl.

    • Sinks: Spray with water, sprinkle the borax-and-baking-soda mixture over the sink, wipe with a soft cloth and rinse.

    • Mirrors: Spritz with water and wipe with a microfiber cloth (figure C). If you are cleaning a large mirror, spritz the cloth and wipe over the mirror.
