Q: How do you store swimming-pool chemicals safely?A: According to the EPA, pool chemicals should be kept in a locked area, on shelves, separated from other types of chemicals. Avoid contaminating them with water until you are ready to use them. Don't mix old and new chemicals even if they are of like kind and brand. Separate incompatible substances; avoid storing containers of liquids above containers of other incompatible substances. Avoid having combustible or flammable materials near the chemicals, particularly gasoline, oil, paint solvents, oily rags, etc. Do not allow ignition sources (e.g., diesel- or gas-powered equipment such as lawn mowers, motors or welding machines) in the storage area.
Q: How should laundry chemicals such as ammonia and bleach be stored?
A: Keep them as far apart as possible; if they combine, they make a toxic gas. Keep them in their original containers, and dispose of them according to package directions.
Chemical Cleaning AttireWhen you're cleaning with chemicals, there are dress precautions you should take (figure B). They include the following:
- Wear long chemical-resistant gloves to cover as much bare skin as possible.
- Wear protective goggles and a face mask.
- Wear a heavy apron that covers you completely.
- Keep lots of heavy-duty plastic garbage bags on hand. Put the chemical waste and cleaning materials in a bag, seal it and put it inside another garbage bag.
Tip: To kill strong odors left in plastic containers, fill the containers with warm water. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard and let the solution set for several hours.
