    Finally, here are some ideas that may help you keep other allergens, besides dust mites, to a minimum in your home.

    • Keep the family pets out of the bedroom (figure A).

    • If you have plants in the bedroom, avoid mold by putting saucers under the pots. The saucers will hold water and protect floors and furniture from water rings.

    • Dust everything in the bedroom at least once a week; when you're finished, shut the door (figure B).

    • Clean the filter in your furnace regularly.

    • Keep your windows closed (figure B).

    • To discourage dust build-up on hard surfaces such as tables, blinds or large appliances, give this recipe a try: Mix one part liquid fabric softener to four parts water. Spray or rub on the surface, then dry with a soft cloth.

    Remember, reducing dust reduces mites and helps you breathe easier. Now it's time to put all this knowledge into action so the next time you take a deep breath, you won't end up coughing and wheezing.
