    • Chocolate on carpet Scrape off excess with a dull straightedge, then spray on a generous amount of carpet spotter (figure A). Work into the stain and blot. Repeat the process several times as needed. If the stain remains, combine 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon ammonia. Saturate the stained area and blot, repeating until the stain is gone. If the stain is deep-set, leave the mixture on the stain for 20 minutes before blotting. Allow the area to dry before walking on the carpet.

    • Beer on clothing Work equal parts white vinegar and dishwashing liquid into the stain (figure B). Rinse with warm water and launder as usual.

    • Beverage stains on clothing Flush the area with water and sprinkle with borax. Work into the stain and launder as usual.

    • Coffee on dry-clean-only fabrics Flush with club soda to prevent the stain from setting (figure C). The carbonation in the soda bubbles the stain up, and the salts prevent it from staining. Blot and sponge with a dry cleaning solution if needed, or take the garment to the dry cleaners.

Now that you know how to throw a party, remember the most important rule of all: relax and enjoy yourself!
