    Figure A
Today, we're throwing a party. When you throw a party, everyone -- including the host (figure A) -- should have a good time. So we're looking at how to throw a bash without leaving disaster in your wake, keeping cleanup to a minimum and handling the results of a messy guest. A party planner will offer party tips, and we'll visit another queen who entertains hundreds of guests a day. Now, let's answer a few questions.

Q: How do you clean glasses that have turned gray in the dishwasher?

A: Put a bowl in the bottom of the dishwasher and fill it with 2 cups of bleach. Put glassware in the top rack. Do not put any metal in this load. Run the dishwasher up to the dry cycle. Next, fill the bowl with 2 cups of white vinegar and run the entire cycle. If the glasses are etched, this won't help, but it should clear up the cloudiness.

Q: Can you remove coffee from fabric?

A: Stretch the stained area over a bowl and sprinkle borax over the stain, then drizzle with the hottest water appropriate for the fabric in a circular pattern over the fabric stain. This should remove the stain.

    Party Stains

    • Mustard on colored fabric Mustard is a difficult stain because it contains turmeric, an ingredient in yellow dye (figure B). Put a towel under the fabric. Apply glycerin to the stain and work in with a tongue depressor or a straightedge. This is a safe and nontoxic way to loosen the grip of the mustard. Let it soak for at least an hour. This method will not always work, depending on the length of time the stain has been on the fabric.

    • Mustard on white fabric Scrap off excess. If the stain is dry, flex the fabric to remove excess mustard. Gather the fabric together in a bunch and tightly wrap a rubber band beneath the stain to keep it from spreading. Put the stained portion of the fabric in a bowl and soak in 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (figure C), as long as overnight. This should either lighten or remove the stain.

Tip: Simmer citrus peels or cinnamon to give your house a warm, inviting aroma.
