    Figure A
Today we are making cleaning a family affair (figure A). Not only are we teaching beginning cleaning to a family, but we are also discussing the value of teaching children that every family member should contribute to the household. Even young children can enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from being part of the household routine.

Q: How do you keep a home clean if you work full time, are responsible for most of the home cleaning and maintain an active lifestyle with the family?

A: Involve the entire family in the cleaning responsibilities. Later in this episode there will be information on age-appropriate cleaning chores that can be made interesting and fun. As an added bonus, completion of chores by the children in your life gives you an opportunity to praise them, which will help build their self-esteem.

Q: How does a busy single parent maintain a clean home?

A: Stay organized, and get the kids involved in the cleaning. If custody is shared, make sure both parents agree on some chores that the children can consistently do at both family homes.

    Figure B

Q: What's the best way to keep a bachelor pad clean (figure B)?

A: Make cleaning fun. Give yourself a time contest: set a timer, put on some fast music and see what you can accomplish in 30 to 45 minutes. Make a list and check off the tasks as they are finished. The pride of accomplishment will spur you on to more cleaning.

Q: How do you get a spouse involved in cleaning?

A: You can either threaten or teach, but teaching is probably best. Show him what needs to be done, then explain and demonstrate the steps required to complete the task on time.

    Preparing to Clean

    • Wear loose-fitting clothes that allow unrestricted movement for both safety and comfort (figure C).

    • An apron with pockets is handy for carrying cleaning cloths or temporarily storing small items you find while cleaning.

    • Wear comfortable nonskid sock or shoes.

    • Have a portable cleaning kit handy. It should include lemon juice, baking soda, borax, club soda, white vinegar, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and paper towels

Quick Tip:If you haven't used an item in a year and it isn't a seasonal or specialty item, hold a rummage sale or give it to charity.
