    Figure A
Q: Can upholstered couch covers be washed in the washing machine?

A: Never wash upholstered fabrics in a washing machine; the covers may shrink and not fit the cushions when the fabric dries, plus the fabric may change color when washed. Spot clean stains but have comprehensive cleaning done by professional furnitue cleaners.

Q: How do you remove wax from a chair (figure A)?

A: Put some ice in a baggie, then put the baggie on the wax. When the wax freezes scrape off the excess with a dull straight edge, like the edge of a credit card or a knife back. Any remaining wax can be removed with a medium hot iron and a brown paper bag. Lay the bag over the wax and press the iron over the bag. The remaining wax will be drawn up into the bag fibers. Keep moving the bag around to a clean spot until all the wax is removed. Use cleaning fluid to spot clean the area.

Q: How do you keep leather furniture from cracking?

A: Keep leather furniture out of the sun and feed with a mixture of hide food, which hydrates the leather. The recipe is given later in the show.

    Cleaning Sticky Food from Upholstery

    1. Scrape off excess food with a dull edge (figure B).

    2. Spray water on a microfiber towel until the towel surface is damp.

Note: Never spray the water directly on the furniture: it can cause a water ring.

    3. Work the towel over the stain in a circular motion.

    4. Rinse the cloth and repeat until the stain is removed.

Vacuuming Tip: Vacuum furniture once a month using the upholstery and crevice tools.
