Organizing the Garage and Gutter Cleaning:

    • The first step in organizing your worktable is to throw away anything you don't need.

    • Group things according to what they are. That will make it easier to organize.

    • When you store your paint, make sure the lid is on real tight and then store it upside down (figure A). This way, you will eliminate the paint film that forms on top of the paint.

    • Hang your fire extinguisher on a wall in a safe place with easy access.

    • You can store small items in jars or plastic bags.

    • A pegboard is great to use to hang tools (figure B).

    • Although an unpleasant chore, it is necessary to clean the gutters year round. There are handy tools to make the job easier -- like this scoop (figure C). It is inexpensive, made of plastic and fits right inside the gutter.

    • It is also a good idea to rinse the gutters. This is a good time to check for leaks.

    • To prevent clogs in the downspouts, install a strainer. They look like hollow wire light bulbs and fit easily into the opening of the downspout.

    • You can install gutter screens to help prevent a buildup of debris. They install easily -- they just slip under the shingle and snap onto the gutter (figure D). You can purchase them made with plastic or metal.

    • Be careful when using an extension ladder. Make sure it only rests on a supported section of the gutter.
