    Cleaning the Playground and Toys

    • Make sure to use latex-based paint on wood play surfaces. A paint dealer can recommend a paint that is safe for kids.

    • For cleaning a wood play structure, you need to use a good all-purpose spray cleaner that is environmentally friendly and safe for kids. Just spray the cleaner on and take a damp cloth and wipe it off. When you are done, take a hose and rinse.

    • For dirt that's tougher to remove, use some baking soda on a scrubbing sponge. Make sure to rinse well to remove all cleaning products.

    • An easy way to clean a baseball mitt is to take moisturizing bath soap and lather it up on a damp cloth. Take the glove and give it a good washing (figure A). There is no need to rinse. When you are done, take a soft cloth and buff it dry.

    • If the baseball glove is drying out a little, you can use petroleum jelly. Put a little on the glove and massage it in with your fingers. Let it soak in for a little while and take a soft cloth and buff it really well.

    • To store a baseball, place the glove in the mitt. It will help it keep its shape.

    • To remove ink from your child's doll, put some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or Q-tip and wipe it off. For stubborn ink stains, you can use a non-oily cuticle remover. Just put it on (figure B) and leave for 10 minutes or overnight. Wash it off and then wash the face with soap and water, rinse it off and then dry.

    • To clean and deodorize your child's stuffed animals, get a plastic bag big enough to hold the animal. Place the animal in the bag and then sprinkle it good with baking soda (figure C). Next, you just shake it, shake it, shake it! Remove the animal and shake it thoroughly and then take a stiff bristle brush and brush the baking soda off really well. The animal is not only clean, but deodorized too.

    • To wash a child's tricycle, use warm water and your favorite dishwashing liquid. Just wash it down with the soap and rinse it with the hose. Take a soft cloth and dry it off to prevent it from rusting. Put a protective coating on the tricycle with a little car wax -- just as you would your car.
