Here are some tips from the Queen of Clean®, Linda Cobb, on food safety and for cleaning grease. - Before grilling, take some nonstick cooking spray and spray on your grill rack when it is cold (figure A). The food will flip over easily now.
- If you are using a pan on your grill for cooking, take a bar of soap and rub on the bottom of the pan and on the sides (figure B). When the soot collects on the pan, it will be easy to wipe off when you are done.
- To remove grease from concrete or your deck when you drop your grilled food on it, just sprinkle the grease spot heavily with regular table salt. Let it sit until it absorbs all the grease. Take your broom and clean it off. If there is any grease left, take a little oven cleaner on it and then hose it off.
- Instead of a grill brush, take a ball of aluminum foil and rub it over your warm grill rack to remove food particles, etc.
- Summer heat and food can create bacteria and it is easy to become sick with food poisoning. Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Have two coolers -- one for hot dishes and one for cold dishes (figure C).
- You can insulate hot foods by wrapping them in newspaper or slipping them into a brown paper bag.
- Large blocks of ice will keep food colder and last longer than cubes. Take a large container that you are going to discard anyway (like a plastic gallon milk container). Rinse the container out real well and fill it about two inches from the top with water. Freeze it until you are ready to go.
- Mayonnaise deteriorates quickly in warm weather. Put the mayonnaise in your potato salad after you get there -- just before you are ready to eat.
- Catsup and mustard deteriorate quickly too. Instead of taking your bottles, now is the time to use of all the packets that you have been saving from the fast food restaurant.
- Remember, if it smells bad throw it out. Don't take chances.
