If you have allergies, Cobb suggests that you use wooden shutters in your bedroom instead of curtains, which harbor allergens and are more difficult to clean.

Linda Cobb, the host of Spruce It Up With the Queen of Clean: Inside the Castle, shares some great tips for fighting allergy problems in the bedroom.

    • Even in the spring and summer, close the windows in the bedroom to keep those allergens out. Let the air conditioner do the job of keeping those particles that make you sneeze out of the house.

    • If you have plants in your bedroom, it's important to have a barrier (figure A) between the plant and the carpet. The barrier will prevent a problem with mold or mildew and water spillage.

    • Painted walls are best for the bedroom because they are easily cleaned. With wallpaper, you could have an allergic reaction to the paste.

    • When selecting lamps for the bedroom, stay away from the more ornate designs because they can attract dust more easily than a simplistic design. Be sure to keep the shades clean and dust free.

    • Flooring does matter. If you have allergies, hard floors are the way to go.

    • Minimize the number of toss pillows to decorate the bed. They collect a lot of dust and allergens.
