The Queen of CleanB., Linda Cobb, demystifies the technique of bed flipping and mattress maintenance. Flipping the Mattress There's a wrong way and right way to flip the mattress, and the Queen reveals the proper steps: - Strip the bed completely.
- Vacuum the mattress before flipping. You can use a hand-held vacuum or a regular one with attachments.
- Before flipping the mattress, it will much easier if you slide a plastic bag (large garbage bag or a dry-cleaning bag) under the surface of the mattress -- between the top mattress and box springs on the side you're going to pull toward (figure A).
- If the size of your mattress is queen or larger, you'll need help -- a two man or woman job!
How often should a mattress be flipped? Every three months as follows: Spring and Summer -- Flip side-to-side.Fall and Winter -- Flip from end to end. - Take a deep breath and pull the mattress toward you (away from the side with the plastic bag) until it is standing on end. Have your helper steady the mattress while you move to the other side to be the "catcher" when the mattress is lowered.
- Lower the mattress, and be sure to go slowly in order to control the mattress.
- Remove the plastic bag and align the top mattress.
- Vacuum the top of the mattress.
The Queen's Dirty Little Secrets - Clean up a wet spill on the bed by blotting with paper towels or rags. Stand the mattress on its side to speed drying.
