To get your upper body in better shape, use fairly heavy weights, says Ask DIY Fitness Expert Stacie Sanders. Lift the weights fast (figure A), but then bring them down slowly. The weights should be heavy enough that after three to eight reps you can't do any more. You can stand and use hand weights or use a piece of equipment such as a bench press. Pick exercises that target several muscle groups at once. Studies show that doing this kind of explosive training helps you gain more strength than doing extra repetitions with lighter weights. Be sure to take a day off between sessions.
