Mario Rizzio's new bedroom is well under way: the walls have been painted to include painted panels and the mirror has a newly painted frame. Now it's time to work on the desk that once belonged to Mario's grandfather.
Materials (Desk):warm water lace stippling brush soap sponges small artist brushes painter's tape varnish tape measure foam brush Benjamin Moore paint #BMHC-50 (Georgian Brick) Benjamin Moore paint #BM2004-10 (Deep Rose) Golden Fluid Acrylic Iridescent Bronze #G2450-4 Benjamin Moore #D144-B (custom dark brown) 1. The desk is cleaned and dusted. 2. Obvious scratches are touched up with D144-B custom dark brown paint and a small brush. 3. The panel on the top of the desk is taped off, starting 3" in at the front and back and 8" in on either side (figure A). 4. The panel area is sanded and wiped free of dust; the inside tape edges are sealed with a thin line of varnish to prevent paint bleed under the tape (figure B).
5. A coat of Georgian Brick is applied to the panel with a foam brush (figure C).6. When the first coat is dry, a coat of Deep Rose paint is brushed on, again using a foam brush and working in a crisscross fashion (figure D). 7. When the paint is dry, custom brown/black glaze is brushed on in a crisscross pattern and, while wet, pounced with a large round stippling brush in a circular design to create a textured faux leather finish. Shannon works in small areas of the panel, repeating the process until the panel is completely pounced (figure E).
8. The border pattern is created with lace and gold paint. The lace is taped in place on both sides and pounced with a stippling brush dipped in Golden Fluid Acrylics Iridescent Bronze paint (figure F) (figure G) (figure H).
