  • Antiquing
  • From "DIY Decorating & Design"
    episode DID-120
    advertisement

Nancy Golden, host of DIY's Decorating and Design, shows how to create an antique finish on a new item.

    1. Choose the item you wish to antique -- the more detailing, the better. (Nancy chose a new terra-cotta planter.) If the item is old, be sure to clean it very well.

    2. Apply a generous base coat of craft acrylic paint -- we used a wheat-colored base. Let dry thoroughly. (You can use a metallic tint, if you wish.)

    3. Spray on a good amount of clear acrylic sealer and let dry. Let dry.

    4. Using a lint-free cloth or paper towel, apply your chosen antiquing color (we used burgundy). Then immediately wipe off the excess, bringing out the design details. Let dry.

    5. Apply a second coat of acrylic sealer and let dry.
