In this segment, Tiki people are created using coffee cans and burlap to use as tabletop decorations.
Materials:coffee cans heavy duty tape brown spray paint dark brown burlap tiki face patterns chalk pencil paint pens multi-colored dried grass dried corn husks scissors carpet tape clear gloss spray sealer flameless candle lights
1. Decide on the sizes of all the tiki people by arranging the coffee cans--stacking some of the smaller cans to create taller ones. Use heavy duty tape to secure the stacked cans.2. Spray paint the cans with brown paint, and then allow it to dry. 3. Meanwhile, make faces on the cans using paint pens.
4. Fringe the top of burlap piece by pulling two to five threads from the top edge.5. Color the back of the face pattern with chalk, and then blow off the excess dust. Place the face pattern onto a piece of burlap, and then cut to fit a can. 6. Trace over the face pattern to transfer the chalk onto the burlap (figure A). Note: The design won't be perfect, but it will give you guide lines. 7. Use paint pens to color in the face shapes onto the burlap (figure B). Go over the paint again to brighten the color. Tip: Using oil based paint pens will usually give a brighter hue. 8. Once all the shapes are colored in, use a black paint pen to outline all of the shapes. Set aside while drying. 9. Set a can bottom up onto the work surface, and then apply carpet tape around the top edge.
10. Cut pieces of multi-colored dried grass about three to four inches long. Press the pieces onto the carpet tape so they extend over the top of the can around the entire can (figure C).11. Place another band of carpet tape over the bottom of the grass pieces, slightly below the first piece of tape. 12. Cut corn husks to about three inches in length, and then stick them to the new layer of carpet tape so they extend over the top of the canbut slightly lower than the colored glass. Continue around the can. 13. Apply carpet tape to the back of the painted burlap along both long edges and both short edges. 14. Wrap the burlap around the can (figure D), being careful to align at the top and the bottom of the can. Press firmly to secure. 15. Spray a clear gloss sealer over the burlap, and then allow it to dry to create the look of a varnished wood carved tiki dude.
