Crepe Paper Flower VinesFold a piece of floral wire into the shape of a hairpin. Attach a piece of double stick tape to the wire (figure A) and crinkle it around the wireCut two 18" pieces of either pink or yellow streamer. Gather and wrap the crepe paper around the taped end of the wire (figure B). Secure the end with another piece of double stick tape. Gather and wrap a second piece of streamer around the first, enlarging the flower.Crimp the gathered streamer tightly around the wire and wrap with floral tape, continuing to wrap the floral tape down the wire to create a stem.Expert Tip: If you have used wire to create a stem for a paper flower, floral tape wrapped around the wire will create a more natural stem-like effect. Open the cocktail umbrella. Hold the three paper flower stems around the toothpick of the cocktail umbrella, pushing the flowers snugly under the umbrella. Beginning at the very base of the flowers, wrap floral tape around the stems and toothpick to hold securely together (figure C).From the green streamer, cut six basic leaf shapes. Use green floral tape to attach end of green streamer to one end of light strand cord. Begin twisting the green streamer, creating a rope-like streamer, wrapping around the light cord as you twist (figure D). When the streamer reaches the end of the light cord, cut off the excess crepe paper and secure the end of the twisted streamer to the end of the cord with additional floral tape.Note: Attach at least four bundles to each strand of lights. Wrap the flower vine around the umbrella pole.FYI from Jeanne: There are over a dozen annual festivals and celebrations in Thailand. You will see umbrellas much like the one created for the show in these parades. And you will often see spectators shielding themselves from the sun with beautifully designed and lacquered paper parasols. Creating these parasols is considered a real art form in Thailand.
