    Materials --

    1/4" dowel rods
    1/2" dowel rods
    Aluminum foil
    Candlewicks
    Taper candles
    Sticky wax
    Citronella-scented beeswax sheets
    Hair dryer

    Garden Torches

    1. Attach sticky wax to dowel rod and cover it with aluminum foil to make it flame retardant.

    2. Attach candle to dowel rod with sticky wax and a small strip of beeswax (figure A).

    3. Fold a sheet of beeswax in half. This should give you 2 squares about 8-1/2" each.

    4. Wind one of those squares around the taper candle (figure B). Press the beeswax that hangs off the candle onto the dowel rod and around the dowel.

    5. Turn a long beeswax sheet on the diagonal and roll it around the candle.

    6. Press the wax onto the candle (figure C).

    7. Use a hair dryer to melt the wax enough so that it easily forms onto the candles.

    8. Display the finished torches in sand-filled terra cotta pots. Place them in the center, with a little tilt, but you want to make sure the wax drips into the pot instead of outside the pot.

      Tip: Save the stubs of the beeswax candles as they burn down, and then reburn them.
