    1. Thin the fabric with fabric stiffener (four parts stiffener to one part water). Stir well to mix -- you want the consistency of white glue. Lay a piece of fabric in a tub or bucket and pour in a small amount of diluted stiffener. Put on rubber gloves and rub the stiffener into the fabric (figure A) pouring in more stiffener as needed until saturated. Once the fabric is totally saturated, wring out the excess liquid. Straighten the fabric out and hang on a clothesline or over the shower curtain rod and allow to dry (about 2 hours). Repeat with the remaining pieces of fabric.

Expert Tip: Fabric stiffener can be used on any type of fabric. You just need to make sure you have the right amount of fabric stiffener. The heavier weight the fabric, the more fabric stiffener you will need to use.

    2. With a hot iron, press the fabric to flatten. There are three different sizes of petals that make up the flowers. For the bud petals (6" x 6") that will go near the top of the vase, fold the fabric four times and then fold that piece in half. Trace the pattern on the fabric (figure B) and then cut out the pattern. Iron the bud petals and then bend the top back with your finger forming the fabric. Hold for a few seconds until cool.

    3. Cut out 10 large flower petals that are about 10" x 12" each. Fold the fabric in half and then in thirds. Trace the pattern onto the fabric and then cut out 10 flower petals. Repeat the ironing process, but use a shallow bowl to form the petal shape (figure C). Allow to cool for a few seconds and then remove the petals from the bowl. The petals should now have a cupped petal shape.

    4. Repeat with the slightly smaller (about 8" x 10") fabric squares, cutting out 10 more petals.

Tip: If you are not happy with the shape, iron the petals flat again and reshape.

    5. Apply double-adhesive carpet tape along the bottom edges of the bud shaped petals. Remove the paper backing from 1 bud petal and apply to the vase so that the pointed tip is about 2" to 3" above the top of the vase and pointed away from the vase (figure D). Repeat with the remaining bud petals, spacing evenly to cover the outer perimeter of the vase.

    6. Apply carpet tape to the top of the remaining petals. Peel the paper backing from the smaller petals and begin placing the petals on the vase beginning at the bottom of the bud shaped petals. Apply all of the smaller petals, working in a circle and gradually working down the vase, then repeat the process for the larger petals, ending at the base of the vase (figure E).

    7. Fill the vase with water and place a floating candle in the water.
