    precut shelves

    Materials (Lamp):

    2. Posterboard is cut to fit the back of the shelves and painted French Pale Blue.

    3. Next, to decorate the shelf back, matte medium (available at art-supply stores) is brushed over the board in small sections. While the medium is still wet, copies of sheet music are laid face down on it and quickly burnished with a putty knife (figure C). The sheets are then peeled off, leaving an impression of the notes in place on the board (figure D). Because the music has been copied, the ink from a copier or a printer will transfer the image to the medium.

    4. The posterboard is positioned on the wall with thumbtacks.

    5. A stud finder and a laser are used to mark the position of the shelves.

    6. Holes are drilled for the shelf brackets, and the shelves are attached to the wall.

    7. Mario's white lampshades are dressed up with squiggly lines of custom dark brown paint (figure E).

The room is put back together: it's now a sophisticated space for Mario to enjoy as he pursues his college studies (figure G) (figure H).
