Mario Rizzio's bedroom/study is nearly finished: the walls are painted with decorative panels, and the desk and mirror have new paint treatments. Shannon Kaye is ready to add the finishing touches to shelves and lamps.
Materials (Shelf):matte medium putty knife thumbtacks level stud finder wall laser drill rollers paint pan Benjamin Moore paint #2161-30 (Dark Mustard) Benjamin Moore paint #H035-K (French Pale Blue) posterboard photocopied sheet music precut shelves Materials (Lamp): Benjamin Moore paint #D144-B (custom dark brown) small artist brushes 1. Precut shelves are painted with Dark Mustard paint (figure A), the same shade as the walls (figure B), and allowed to dry.
2. Posterboard is cut to fit the back of the shelves and painted French Pale Blue.3. Next, to decorate the shelf back, matte medium (available at art-supply stores) is brushed over the board in small sections. While the medium is still wet, copies of sheet music are laid face down on it and quickly burnished with a putty knife (figure C). The sheets are then peeled off, leaving an impression of the notes in place on the board (figure D). Because the music has been copied, the ink from a copier or a printer will transfer the image to the medium.
4. The posterboard is positioned on the wall with thumbtacks.5. A stud finder and a laser are used to mark the position of the shelves. 6. Holes are drilled for the shelf brackets, and the shelves are attached to the wall. 7. Mario's white lampshades are dressed up with squiggly lines of custom dark brown paint (figure E).
The room is put back together: it's now a sophisticated space for Mario to enjoy as he pursues his college studies (figure G) (figure H).
