    These old wine crates—now storage units, offer the homeowner a place to stay organized while infusing a vintage feel to the room.
    Materials:

    wooden crates
    3/4" MDF
    power drill
    screws
    drill bits for pilot holes
    router and beading or roundover bit
    paint
    polyurethane
    cleaning supplies

    1. Clean the crates with soap and water.

    2. If desired, you can stain newer crates to look like older ones to give a uniform appearance.

    3. Apply 2-3 coats of polyurethane to the crates to seal them, and give a bit of shine.

    4. Cut a backer board out of 3/4" MDF.

    5. Place the crates on backer board and arrange in an aesthetically pleasing array.

    6. Attach the crates to one another using drywall or wood screws to create one solid unit. Remember to pre-drill, especially when using old wood which will split if you're not careful.

    7. Mark the placement of the crates on the backer board.

    8. Remove the crates from the backer board and pre-drill the holes within the marks that you just made. These holes will accept screws that will mount the crates to the baker board from the back side (figure A).

    Installation:

    1. Find the studs in the wall.

    2. Make marks where the studs fall behind your crate storage unit.

    3. Pre-drill for screws that will mount the crate storage unit to the studs in your wall.

    4. Lift the crates into place and screw to the wall (figure B).
