Formal yet funky—this dining room set is complete with built-in flower pots and a jeweled tabletop.
    Materials:

    Iron table and chair set
    Sandpaper
    Metal primer
    Metal paint
    Vinyl
    Stapler
    1/4" staples
    Spray glue
    Planter boxes
    Tape measure
    Square
    Power drill
    Drill bits
    Jig saw
Clear drying tub and tile caulk
    Caulk gun
    Notched tiling knife
    Glass aquarium rocks

    Iron Table Base:

    1. Sand the table base lightly.

    2. Prime with a metal primer.

    3. Paint a glossy white with rust inhibiting metal paint.

    Iron Chairs:

    1. Remove the chair cushions.

    2. Sand, prime and paint the iron bases in the same fashion as the table base.

    3. Recover the seats with a weather resistant fabric.

    4. Use the old cushion as a template to cut the new fabric to size.

    5. Attach the new fabric to the cushions using 1/4" staples (figure A) and spray glue if desired.

    6. Re-attach the cushions to the painted frame.

    Tabletop:

    1. Determine the placement of the planter boxes on the tabletop.

    2. Measure and mark for cuts to create the holes that will hold the planter boxes.

    3. Cut into the tabletop. Drill holes large enough to fit your jigsaw blade in the corners of the square you are cutting (figure B). Cut along the lines using a jig saw.

    4. Place pre-painted planter boxes into the holes (figure C), and then secure using drywall screws.

    5. Fill the screw holes and caulk all seams of the box and between the boxes and the table.

    6. Paint the edges of the table.

    7. Tile the table with glass aquarium rocks (figure D). Decide on your layout before applying adhesive. Use clear drying caulk as your adhesive. Spread the caulk using a notched tiling knife so that you have a level base of adhesive. Place the rocks into the caulk, and then allow 24 hours to dry.

    8. Place small potted plants of your choice into the planter boxes to finish the project.

    Project Expense:

    Table and chairs: Free
    Planters and aquarium rocks: $19
    Fabric: $12
    Materials: $30

    Total: $61
