  • From "From Junky to Funky"
    episode DFJF-101

Clever is the best way to describe David Beaupre's idea to create a "mega mobile" for Kena Norris's loft out of scrap Plexiglas and the small mirrors from a discarded disco ball.

From Junky to Funky mission number one is complete ... and Kena is one happy loft dweller!

    1. Drill holes slightly larger than the silver cord through wooden embroidery hoops for hanging.

    2. Spray the paint hoops with white primer, making sure to give the edges a good coat and let dry.

    3. Pull off the mirrors (figure A) from the mirror balls using gloves and a one inch paint scraper or small pry bar.

    4. Next, glue the mirrors onto the hoops using tile adhesive.

    5. Apply pressure to the mirror and the hoop. Wipe off any excess glue when all mirrors are on but before the glue is completely dry.

    6. Draw or trace circles onto a sheet of blue Plexiglas (figure B).

    7. Cut out the circles using a band saw leaving the paper or plastic protective backing.

    8. Soak the circles in hot water to peel off the backing paper. If it has plastic coating, simply peel it off.

    9. Drill holes slightly bigger than the cord or plastic discs for hanging.

    10. Cut hula hoops using a hack saw into arches no bigger than at least half of your entire hanging space. Then drill holes into the ends (figure C) of the hula hoops for hanging.

    11. Lightly sand the hoop pieces, then spray with a special primer specifically made for plastics. Paint metallic blue.

    12. Next, cut several lengths of silver cord.

    13. Starting with the master hula hoop thread the cord through embroidery hoops, thread the cord through the silver hoops, then through the plastic discs tying off with simple square knots (figure D). Snip off the excess cord, then super glue the knot.

    14. Arrange and hang the three elements in an aesthetically pleasing manner.

    15. Glue little mirrors sandwich style to fill in blank spaces, using blue painter's tape as a clamp.

    16. Let everything dry overnight.

    Project Expense:

    Hula Hoops and Plexiglas: Free
    Mirrors: Free
    Aircraft Cable: $10
    Embroidery Hoops: $30

    Total: $40
