Note: Samantha's idea was inspired by a stained-glass window (figure A) that David and Michael found in the garbage.

    1. First, conceptualize your idea for the couch by first laying the fabric out on the couch (figure B).

    2. Cover the couch back and sides with a solid upholstery fabric. Start by measuring the couch, then cut out the fabric. Spray the couch with adhesive and lay fabric down.

    3. Draw the main design for the couch directly onto the couch (figure C) using a thick marker.

    4. Begin to cut pieces in geometric designs to match the drawing on the couch.

    5. Pin the pieces to the couch atop the drawing. At this point, alter the patter and color as needed.

    6. Next, sew the pieces together using a satin stitch (figure D).

    7. Cut, place and stitch the fabric for the couch arms and other areas.

    8. Finally, create a slipcover for the base seat. To do so, first measure the seat area and sew both long sides and one short side. Cover the seat, then hand-sew the remaining sides.

    Project Expense:

    Sofa: $50
    Fabric and Thread: $175
    Material: $18

    Total: $243
