With a plan in place by the From Junky to Funky designers (David Beaupre, Michael Spatafora and Samantha Gleisten) and some fun items found -- including a disco ball you'll see later -- for Kena Norris's loft, it's time to implement the changes. The makeover begins with Michael assembling together metal crates to serve as storage and seating.

Three discarded crates were converted into this practical and attractive storage bench.

The designers found some "super-sturdy" crates that will make the perfect seating-and-storage combo for Kena's loft. Here's how they were converted:- Place the crates side-by-side, then clamp them together (figure A).
- Drill 5/16" holes through the sides of the crates.
Note: If drilling through metal, use a cutting fluid to extend the life of your drill bit. - Bolt the crates together using 1/4" bolts of proper length. Four bolts were used in this example.
- Next, add spacers as needed to keep proper alignment.
Note: In this project stacks of washers (figure B) were used between the crates as spacers. - Measure the top of the crates after they are bolted together to figure dimensions for your top section.
- Then, construct the top out of 1/2" MDF. Cut one large piece (figure C) that will be the actual bench seating area.
- Make small strips of MDF to act as a reveal for your bench top. This reveal will make the bench appear to be thicker.
- Cut the reveal pieces with 45-degree angles in the corners.
- Attach the reveal with nails and glue. Fill all the nail holes with wood fill, then sand smooth when dry.
- Next, prime and paint the bench top.
- Attach the bench top to the crates using small screws through the crates from the underside of the bench top.
- For a finishing touch, recover old pillows (figure D) to use as cushions.
Project Expense: Crates: Free MDF and Paint: $20 Pillows and Fabric: $18 Total: $38
