    Mosaic Bar Top

To add more color to the kitchenette portion of the pool house, Golden decides to add a mosaic bar top using glass tile. Glass tile comes in any shape, size and color and can be found at most craft stores.

    Materials:

    Glass tile
    Chalk line tools
    Cement backer board
    Tile nipper
    Box cutter
    Adhesive
    Spacers
    Notched trowel
    Sponge
    Prepasted grout
    Grout floater
    Heavy-duty sandpaper

    1. The current countertop is formica. Formica repels water and will cause the tile to buckle, so Golden installs (figure A) a cement backer board on top of the existing countertop.

    2. Drop a chalk line onto the cement backer board (figure B) to find the center.

Safety tip: It's a good idea to wear rubber gloves when working with adhesive.

    3. Apply adhesive directly to the back of the 4" tile square with a notched trowel (figure C). Place the tile in the center of the cement backer board and work outward.

    4. Add adhesive to the cement backer board with a notched trowel (figure D) and continue tiling. Because it is a mosaic, there is no set pattern. The tiles can fit together in any form or color.

    5. Use spacers (figure E) to separate the larger tiles. Spacers come in many sizes, depending on the grout line desired.

    6. Let dry overnight.
