Buy unusual items at flea markets and yard sales, and use them in the kitchen for a functional, decorative touch. Cindy Piccoli, host of HGTV's Decorating With Style, demonstrates quick and easy projects that give an old ladder and an old toolbox new life as kitchen accessories. Ladder Towel Rack Spruce up an old ladder with a coat of paint, and hang it on your kitchen wall to catch dish towels. Toolbox Fix-Up Paint an old toolbox, and use it to carry silverware from the kitchen to the dinner table, or mount it on the wall to store spices or display pretty dishes. Materials:
Old toolbox Paint Rag Foam board PEELnSTICKB. fabric (or fabric and fabric glue) Ruler Straightedge Razor knife - Measure the inside of the toolbox for the lining (figure A).
- Dip the rag in paint, and wipe on the toolbox (figure B) to give just a hint of color.
- While the paint is drying, use a razor knife and a straightedge to cut a piece of foam board to fit the bottom of the toolbox (figure C).
- Cut the fabric an inch or two bigger than the foam-board lining all around.
- Center the foam board on the sticky side of the PEELnSTICK fabric (figure D), and wrap the fabric around the board as you would wrap a package. If you use fabric without adhesive, attach it to the foam board with fabric glue.
- When paint and glue are dry, place the foam board inside the toolbox.
