Red, yellow and green lacquer revitalize this $25 flea-market find. A less colorful option would be to finish it with a wood stain.

A flea market is a great place to hunt for bargains, but the sheer volume of stuff can make it overwhelming. Jennifer Convey, host of HGTV's Awesome Interiors, joins interior designer Harry Segil for flea-market shopping tips at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, California.

Shopping a swap meet as big as the monthly Rose Bowl Flea Market, which has more than 1,600 vendors, can be especially daunting. Flea markets are usually organized in a grid pattern. It's best to have a plan and to walk the rows in an organized way.

    Tips for Flea-Market Shopping

    1. Walk the market in an organized way.
    2. Set a fixed budget.
    3. Know what you want.

Jennifer Convey had a fixed budget of $150 to buy furniture for her condo. Having a general idea of what you want can keep you from being distracted by piles of jewelry or other enticing goodies, and setting a fixed budget can be fun, bringing on the bargaining to get the best possible deal.

With Harry Segil's help, Jennifer stayed within her budget and found a bunch of bargains to help furnish her condo. A $25 magazine rack, an $8 lamp and a $75 dining-room set were brightened up with colorful enamel. A vintage tablecloth costing only $10 provided enough fabric to cover four chair cushions, with fabric left over for matching napkins.
