To prevent the table from coming apart too easily, a locking center is added, and a finish is applied to protect and complement the walnut.

    Materials:

    5" x 5" block of walnut
    Small piece of walnut
    Compass
    Pencil
    Screw
    Woodworker's glue
    Drill with small bit
    Band saw
    Sandpaper
    Tack cloth
Satin polyurethane varnish, in desired shade

    1. To create locking block (figure A) for tabletop, first use compass to draw a 6-5/8" circle on the piece of walnut (figure B). Cut the circle using the band saw.

    2. Measure inner diameter of legs and transfer measurements to the circular piece. Cut arches along edges of circular piece (figure C).

    3. Glue the square and circular pieces together. Drill holes and add small screw through center of both pieces.

    4. Remove legs from the top and add the locking block to the center of the table. Screw into place (figure D).

    5. Add legs and lock them into place (figure E).

    6. Create a small shelf for lower leg area by cutting another circle. Measure the inner area between the legs and transfer measurement to the circle.

    7. Cut notches and fit shelf into place (figure F).

    8. Disassemble the table and sand the entire piece.

    9. Use a tack cloth to remove any dust, and apply two coats of satin polyurethane varnish. Allow finish to dry thoroughly between applications.

    10. Finally, assemble the finished, dried table. First expand legs and add shelf; then add top and lock into place.
